The Rebirth of an Icon Now: How Chery and JLR are Transforming Freelander into an EV Powerhouse

The Rebirth of an Icon: How Chery and JLR are Transforming Freelander into an EV Powerhouse

For automotive enthusiasts who remember the late 1990s and 2000s, the “Freelander” nameplate evokes memories of a compact, rugged, and adventurous 4×4. It was the entry point into the legendary Land Rover family before it was phased out a decade ago.

The Freelander name is officially back. However, it isn’t just a single car anymore. Through a deeply integrated, restructured joint venture, Chinese auto giant Chery and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have officially spun Freelander into its own standalone, premium New Energy Vehicle (NEV) global brand. With a hyper-aggressive roadmap that promises six new models over the next five years, this partnership is rewriting the playbook on how heritage design and next-gen electric tech collide.

The First of the Pack: The Massive Freelander 8

Unveiled following its sleek “Concept 97” preview, the first production-ready vehicle spearheading this onslaught is the Freelander 8. If you are expecting a compact commuter like the original, think again. The Freelander 8 has undergone a monumental growth spurt.

Stretching over 5.1 meters (200.7 inches) long and riding on a massive 3,040 mm wheelbase, this full-size family SUV is actually longer, wider, and taller than a standard-wheelbase Range Rover. Tipping the scales at nearly three tonnes, its physical road presence is absolutely commanding.

Designed under the watchful eye of JLR’s creative teams, the Freelander 8 beautifully honors its roots while sprinting into the future. It features a boxy “castle body” silhouette, a dual-peak hood, and subtle Easter eggs like the signature triangular window motif. However, the closed-off front fascia, sleek rectangular bumper elements, and roof-mounted LiDAR unit firmly anchor it in the modern EV era.

Under the Skin: Three Powertrains, One Global Platform

Chery’s profound expertise in electric vehicle architectures serves as the backbone for the Freelander brand’s rapid expansion. Built on a highly adaptable, dedicated electrified platform, the upcoming lineup will avoid forcing buyers to choose between one single fuel type.

Instead, Freelander models will offer three distinct powertrain configurations:

  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV): Utilizing a high-efficiency dual-motor, all-wheel-drive layout.
  • Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV): Combining traditional combustion with robust electric capability.
  • Extended-Range EVs (EREV): Featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine acting purely as an on-board generator to charge the battery and entirely eliminate range anxiety.

To complement these powertrains, fully electric variants will adopt an advanced 800V electrical architecture. Paired with specialized batteries co-developed with CATL, the vehicles will support ultra-fast DC charging speeds of up to 350 kW, enabling lightning-quick top-ups during long road trips.

Silicon-Valley Spec Intelligence Meets Luxury Comfort

While JLR handles the prestige and styling, Chery is leveraging elite local tech giants to ensure the Freelander lineup dominates the software wars.

Step inside the six-seat, three-row cabin of the Freelander 8, and you are greeted by an ultra-premium sanctuary. The dashboard features a massive, pillar-to-pillar Mini LED display integrated seamlessly below the windshield, alongside a secondary central touchscreen and physical rotary dials. Rear passengers are treated to “zero-gravity” executive seats boasting deep reclining angles for ultimate travel comfort.

Powering this massive digital ecosystem is the top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 processor. On the safety and automation front, Freelander vehicles come equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS intelligent driving suite. Supported by an 896-channel roof LiDAR and a binocular camera system, the SUV features an Intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS). The car actively scans the road surface ahead using real-time data, automatically adjusting the twin-chamber air suspension and terrain modes before the wheels even hit a bump.

A Global Assault on the Horizon

Chery and JLR are not building the Freelander brand just to compete in a crowded Chinese market. Production lines at the upgraded plant in Changshu are preparing a global rollout. The brand has already confirmed that its models will launch from day one in left-hand drive, right-hand drive, and dedicated European specifications.

With a new model scheduled to drop roughly every six months over the next five years, the Middle East is slated to receive the brand first, followed by wider rollouts in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
