From Tiruppur to Vice-Presidential Frontrunner – The Remarkable Rise of CP Radhakrishnan

In an unexpected yet strategic move, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan—more commonly known as C. P. Radhakrishnan—as its contender for the Vice President of India. Though his name might not have been on everyone’s radar initially, his long, steady climb through the political ranks reveals why he stands out as a compelling choice.

Early Life and Political Roots

Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan’s journey began with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from V. O. Chidambaram College in Thoothukudi.

From the age of 16, he was closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a foundational pillar of his ideological identity. His rise began when he joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh‘s state executive committee in 1974—precursor to the BJP.

Parliamentary Anchors & Grassroots Influence

Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in consecutive terms (1998 and 1999). During his parliamentary career, he chaired the Standing Committee on Textiles and participated in key panels on Public Sector Undertakings and Finance.

His international representation came into focus as well—he took part in the UN General Assembly in 2003 and was part of India’s first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.

State Leadership & Iconic Campaigns

From 2004 to 2007, Radhakrishnan served as BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, during which he spearheaded a 93-day, 19,000‑km Ratha Yatra. This massive tour addressed issues like river interlinking, communal harmony, drugs, and uniform civil code—demonstrating his activist leadership style.

His governance experience expanded to economic administration when he served as Chairman of the Coir Board (2016‑2020), overseeing record exports of ₹2,532 crore.

He further served as BJP’s national in-charge for Kerala (2020–2022) and became a long-standing national executive member of the party.

Constitutional Roles: From Governor to VP Hopeful

Radhakrishnan’s constitutional journey began in 2023, when he was appointed Governor of Jharkhand. He later held additional charges as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry in March 2024. In July 2024, he became the Governor of Maharashtra—a post he still holds.

His nomination for the vice-presidency came soon after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, prompting an election scheduled for September 9, 2025.

Why Radhakrishnan? A Blend of Traits for the Times

A statesman respected across regions:

Often described as “a statesman” who commands respect across party lines, his reputation for humility, integrity, and grassroots connection made him an appealing nomination.

Strategic southern representation:

As a Tamil Nadu leader from the influential Gounder (OBC) community, his nomination reflects political strategy aimed at bolstering southern outreach, especially ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly polls.

Broad alliance support:

NDA allies such as the TDP, LJP (Ram Vilas), and HAM (Secular) have extended their wholehearted support, showcasing the consensus and acceptance across coalition lines.

Radhakrishnan’s Statement: What He Said

Upon his nomination, Radhakrishnan expressed deep gratitude:

“My heartfelt thanks to our beloved People’s leader… Prime Minister… Amit Shah… JP Nadda… NDA partners… I assure to work hard for the nation until my last breath. Jai Hind!”.

His emphasis on dedication, coupled with a narrative of humility and service, set the tone for his campaign for this high constitutional office.

Looking Ahead

Radhakrishnan’s nomination emerged as a blend of experience, inclusivity, regional strategy, and ethical leadership. With the NDA holding a majority in the 788‑member electoral college (Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha), his probability of winning is substantial.

As the election draws near, this moment not only marks a milestone in Radhakrishnan’s own career, but also signals key shifts in political representation and party dynamics in India.
